Official Press Release from the Merced County Sheriff’s Office:

On January 8, 2018 at about 9:47pm, The Merced County Sheriff’s Office was called to the area of Mediterranean Avenue and King Street in Delhi for a carjacking. Within minutes of the call, Deputy Kao Ly located the vehicle which was a green colored 1999 Honda Accord. The vehicle fled from Deputy Ly and a pursuit began. The vehicle crashed at the off ramp in the area of Hwy 99 and Bradbury, and the suspect took off on foot and deputies gave chase. It was not long till Deputy Tim Goncalves and Deputy Damian Sparks joined in and set up a perimeter and searched the neighborhood yard by yard. The suspect, who was a 17 year old juvenile, was apprehended by Deputies Goncalves and Sparks. Additionally, a pistol was located in the yard near the suspect.

The Sheriff’s Office has started a new shift rotation and now has the “boots on the ground”. We have implemented a new shift schedule doubling the deputies on patrol during peak hours. Sheriff Vern Warnke and the DSA (Deputy Sheriff’s Association) has worked together to implement this coverage. Sheriff Warnke commented by saying, “we were fortunate enough to have the man power and boots on the ground that took quick action and was able to take the bad guy into custody, and coincidentally, the new shift rotation started last night”.
