Merced County SCAM ALERT: Do NOT buy puppies online

***Be Careful When Buying Puppies Online***

Yesterday afternoon, a local Gustine resident came to the police department to report he had been scammed for over $2700.00 when he answered a “free puppy” ad on Craigslist.

Gustine Police urge people to take caution when answering these type of ads. The owners of the pet aren’t asking for any money — except for the shipping costs.

“They’ll probably ask you some questions meant to pull at your heartstrings and make you want to qualify to get this free puppy. But they want some money to ship the puppy, and they want it sent through the Western Union or MoneyGram. Many times they want you to send this money to somewhere like Cameroon, and that you will receive a full refund in hand when you pick up the pet as in yesterday’s case…”
