On April 28, 2017, Jose Mireles was shot to death outside his home on San Mateo Court in Merced. The victim was shot multiple times in the upper body around 9:45 p.m. at the bottom of a stairway of an apartment complex in the 3300 block of San Mateo Court. The victim’s children, two girls and a boy, ages 6 and younger, were inside the apartment at the time of the shooting. They were not injured.
The victim was involved in an argument with the suspect shortly before the shooting, but the nature of the fight was unclear. The suspect fired multiple shots before he ran away from the scene. When officers arrived on scene, they performed lifesaving efforts until paramedics arrived. The victim passed away at the crime scene.
Over the last three months, detectives have been working on the case and witnesses were able to identify the suspect as a 16-year-old juvenile from Merced. Detectives also connected the suspect to the scene with forensic evidence.
After identifying the suspect, detectives began looking for him and were eventually contacted by a Fresno Attorney who wanted to arrange the surrender of the suspect to Merced Investigators. The suspect was brought to the Merced Police Department on August 2, 2017, at approximately 2:30 p.m., and surrendered himself into the custody of Detective Chris Russell. The juvenile was interviewed, photographed and later booked into Merced County Juvenile Hall for committing the homicide.
