Update on collision involving Merced County Sheriff vehicle last night

On Saturday June 17, 2017 at approximately 7:53 P.M. the Merced Police Department responded to an injury traffic collision involving an on duty Merced County Sheriff’s Deputy. The collision occurred on “G” Street at the intersection with Alexander Avenue.

The Merced Police Department is conducting the traffic collision investigation. So far investigators have learned Merced County Sheriff’s Deputy was traveling south on “G” Street, going through the intersection with Alexander Ave. The deputy was driving a 2017 Ford Explorer Police Vehicle. At the same time Jonathon Munguia (19, Merced) was driving a silver 1998 Honda Civic west bound Alexander Ave crossing “G” Street. The two vehicles collided in the intersection, causing extensive damage to both vehicles.

The Deputy was transported to a local hospital and treated for his injuries. Munguia and his 17-year-old female passenger were transported to Modesto area hospitals for their injuries. Family members have stated that the female passenger is currently in a coma with a fractured skull.

The cause of the collision is under investigation. Drugs and alcohol are not a factor.
