Buhach Colony High School Thunder Band Makes School History at Recent Festival

The Buhach Colony High School Thunder Band recently completed a school record-breaking festival season. The Band performed at the California Music Educator Association Bay Section Concert Band Festival at Downey High School in Modesto and earned a unanimous superior rating. To achieve this honor they had to receive the highest possible score (superior) from the three judges who critiqued their three prepared pieces, as well as receive a superior from a fourth judge in sight-reading (playing music they had never seen before). The band is made up from freshman through seniors, and is the only concert band at the school (you’ll see why this is so special if you keep reading).

Some of the remarkable comments from the panel of judges included:
Members of the Buhach Colony Thunder Band performing in Disneyland during the school’s Spring Break

Judge Number One: “It is obvious that this is an audition only honor group at your High School…”

Judge Number Two: “I teach a community college Band in Reno Nevada and you are DOING what I try to get my college students to do…”

Judge Number Three: “Entire sections of musicians are coming in and it sounds like a single Instrument is playing…”

Under the direction of Mr. Chad Humpal, a HUGE Star Wars fan, the Band has now earned a Unanimous Superior Rating seven times in the last nine years (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2017).  The Band also set a new school record earning their highest performance score average in school history: a 96.33!  This is an extremely rare accomplishment for any High School in California.

Thank you to all of the Thunder Band students, leaders, staff, and parents for such a tremendous achievement!  It is great to see the positive things that youth in our community are doing!
