On the morning of Saturday November 27th, 2016, Atwater Police were summoned to Chadala Court in Atwater regarding a domestic disturbance. Officers Pitney and Sgt. Smothers arrived at the home and met with a female juvenile in the front yard of the home who told them that her mother and father were upstairs fighting. Both officers entered the home and reported hearing the sounds of a male yelling upstairs. They specifically overheard the male make a statement about killing the female. Officers then entered the bedroom and found the male (identified later as David Coronado, III) holding a hunting knife drawn back as if he was about to stab the female who was sitting on the bed in front of him. A taser was deployed by Sgt. Smothers which struck Coronado in the upper torso causing him to drop the knife and become incapacitated long enough for the officers to take him into custody.
David Coronado, III was booked into the Merced County Jail on charges of Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Criminal Threats and Domestic Assault. He is also a documented Norteño gang member and on active CDC Parole.
