ATWATER PD K-9 APPREHENDS HIT AND RUN SUSPECT AFTER FLEEING SCENE

On August 29th, 2016 at approximately 8:50 P.M., Atwater Police Officers were investigating a hit and run, minor injury traffic collision in the area of First Street and Atwater Boulevard. One of the parties involved in the collision fled the accident scene on foot. Other officers were checking the area for the male who fled and he was eventually located in the area of the 1000 Block of Winton Way. The suspect attempted to flee again from pursuing officers. K-9 Officer Fred Robinson was dispatched to the area along with his K-9 “Boss.”

The suspect was eventually located by Officer Robinson in an apartment complex at Sierra Vista and Olive Avenue. After several orders to stop given by Officer Robinson, the suspect continued to flee and APD’s K-9 “Boss” was deployed. As the subject attempted to flee over a fence, K9 “Boss” apprehended him and he was taken into custody.

The suspect was identified as Pedro Diaz (27) of Livingston (later found to be Augustine Lopez Diaz).  Diaz was transported to a nearby hospital where he was treated for multiple dog bites.  Diaz was later booked into Merced County Jail on charges of hit and run, driving under the influence and resisting or delaying a peace officer in the performance of his duties.

Atwater Interim Chief of Police Samuel Joseph wished to commend Officer Robinson and his partner “Boss” as well as the other officers involved in the suspect’s apprehension.
