SUSPECT IDENTIFIED IN YESTERDAYS SHOOTING IN ATWATER

On 08/28/16 at approximately 6:34 p.m., a report of a shooting incident was received by the Atwater Police Department.  The original caller reported hearing gunshots in the 2300 block of Palm Avenue.  Responding officers located a male adult from Merced suffering from a gunshot wound.  Officers were able to gather information at the scene that the suspect fled to a residence across the street.  Officers remained at a residence in the 2400 block of Palm while other officers tended to the victim until the arrival of or Riggs Ambulance.

During the investigation officers learned that a fight broke out and a male who had been visiting the residents in the 2400 block of Palm, walked across the street and shot the victim. Witnesses stated the victim was only trying to break up the fight when the suspect shot the victim at point blank range.  Once the victim fell to the ground, the suspect shot at the victim a second time before fleeing to the home across the street.  The victim was transported to an undisclosed hospital and was underwent surgery. His status is unknown at this time.

The residents on Palm Avenue were detained and a protective sweep was conducted of the home; however the alleged suspect had already fled the scene.

Detectives were notified and the departments Crime Scene Unit also responded.  Casings were recovered at the scene and in the home.  A positive identification was made on the suspect, who has been identified as Roman Carrango Tapia (53), an Atwater resident; Tapia is still at large.
