MERCED SHERIFF’S DEPUTIES PURSUE AND ARREST ALLEGED CARJACKING SUSPECTS

This is an update to a story we brought you on June 20th.

On 6/19/16 at 9:45 p.m., two 19 year-old males were parked in the 700 block of Scott Road, McSwain School, waiting for their friends.  While waiting they noticed a vehicle pull behind them and two occupants exited their vehicle.  The suspects held the victims at gunpoint and forcefully took the victim’s 1997 red Honda Accord.

At approximately 12:30 a.m., Merced Sheriff’s Deputies saw the red Honda at Santa Fe and N. Highway 59 in Merced. Once Merced PD backup units arrived, the deputy attempted to stop the vehicle, but the suspects failed to yield. The sheriff’s deputy, along with MPD pursued the vehicle throughout the City of Merced reaching speeds up to 80 mph.

At 12:54 a.m., the suspects pulled over in the 200 block of E. 23rd Street in Merced and a felony vehicle stop ensued. Both suspects were taken into custody without further incident.  One suspect was a 15 year old male juvenile, who was booked into the Iris Garrett Correctional Facility on the charges of carjacking, evading and possession of stolen property.

The second suspect was identified as Monica Carmen Rios (23).  She was booked into Merced County Jail for possession of stolen property, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and for violating probation.  She remains in custody on $90,000 bond.

The Merced County Sheriff’s Deputies did a great job continuing to look for the stolen vehicle and locating it.  Great job to the deputies and backup from Merced PD and California Highway Patrol.  What a great example of multi-agency teamwork!
