MERCED PD GVSU & COUNTY MAGNET TEAMS TAKE MORE GUNS OFF STREETS

On 03/30/16 the Merced Police Department Gang Violence Suppression Unit assisted by the Merced Area Gang/Narcotic Enforcement Team continued their efforts to remove guns from gang members throughout the Merced Area.

In the first incident GVSU Officer’s Pinnegar and Salyers followed up on a tip that convicted felon Justin Brazil was in possession of a sawed-off shotgun. Officer’s went to his residence in the 300 block of Brookdale Drive. A search of the residence revealed a 12 gauge sawed-off shotgun. Brazil was not home and officers are currently searching for him.

In the second incident Officer Salyers received information on a residence in the Beachwood area that may have numerous guns. Officer Salyers wrote a search warrant for the location and served it with the assistance of MAGNET. As Officer’s and Agents approached the residence a 15 year old male juvenile ran out of the back door of the residence. He was quickly apprehended and it was determined he was wanted for a Forcible Rape investigation being conducted by the Merced Police Department Major Crimes Division.

Located in the residence was Nathaniel Munguia a documented gang member. During the search of his residence Officer’s found a .223 AR-15 rifle with a scope, a .22 caliber bolt action rifle and two .380 caliber handguns. Officer’s also located ammo, holsters and other gun magazines in a large military duffle bag. Officers are working to determine if these guns are stolen.

Munguia was taken to the Merced County Jail and booked for being a felon in possession of guns and ammo as well as gang enhancements.

So far this year the GVSU and MAGNET have seized nearly 55 illegally possessed guns by gang members.
