According to Lt. Samuel Joseph, on 3/29/16, at 11:55 p.m., Atwater PD Officer Crain conducted an area check in the 1800 block of Atwater Blvd. While doing so he contacted a male identified as Jorge Cardenas (39), on the south side of the railroad tracks. Cardenas saw Officer Crain and began to walk over the tracks, at which time Officer Crain met up with him.
While Officer Crain was talking with Cardenas, he could see a concealed axe type weapon with two points and a fix blade knife sticking from the top of the axe. The axe was concealed under Cardenas’ jacket, but was visible when he moved his arm.
Officer Crain placed Cardenas in handcuffs and removed the axe from his jacket. Officer Crain confirmed that it had a wooden handle and two points on it. A pocket knife was taped to the top of the axe so the blade was sticking straight up. It was also altered so it could not be closed as it was manufactured to do.
Cardenas under arrest for possession of a concealed dirk or dagger and a search was done incident to arrest. During the search Officer Crain located a fix bladed knife (blade uncovered and exposed) in his front right pocket. A check with dispatch revealed that Cardenas was on active Probation for possession of a stolen vehicle. He was booked into Merced County Jail on the above charges, along with violating his probation.
Lt. Joseph commended Officer Crain for his keen eye observing the weapon and for spot checking areas of Atwater on foot.
