Council: Medical marijuana Tuesday, Town Hall Thursday
The Merced City Council has a busy week ahead with three meetings scheduled.
Tuesday Council has a 5:30 p.m. study session in the Council Chambers to begin the
review of the marijuana ordinances passed earlier this year.
Thursday night at 6 p.m. is the last of a series of three Town Hall meetings that
will be held in the Merced Multicultural Arts Center, 645 W. Main St.
Tonight they meet in closed session to conduct interviews with the City Attorney
The Council approved three ordinances banning medical marijuana dispensaries,
deliveries and cultivation in reaction to three new state laws approved in
September. The law on cultivation was set to go into effect March 1, and without any
local ordinance in place the state law would have regulated growing within Merced.
That law has since been rescinded.
When the Council approved three ordinances they directed staff to come back prepared
with options for the Council to consider. During the study session Council will be
considering a series of questions regarding medical marijuana including if
dispensaries were allowed, what commercial zone would they be allow in, and how many
plants would someone be allowed to grow?
There will be time set aside for the public to weigh in on the issues regarding
dispensaries, deliveries and cultivation during the study session. Council Chambers
are located on the second floor of the Merced Civic Center (City Hall), 678 W. 18th
St, (18th and N) Merced.
Council decided to add a third Town Hall meeting this year for Central Merced in
addition to the ones in northern and southern Merced. The Town Halls are intended to
discuss any city-related issues residents may have in an informal atmosphere.
Issues brought up during the previous two Town Halls have ranged from the need for
more youth programs to problems with feral cats. Hmong and Spanish language
translators are available.
City Council meetings, study sessions and Town Hall meetings are streamed live on
the Internet. A link to the live meeting is
