“Deputy Attacked, Forced to Defend Himself”

On December 29th, a Merced County Sheriff’s Deputy was attacked by a woman with a knife seconds after arriving at a call for service in the 29000 block of Del Sol Ct, in Santa Nella, in which the reporting party described her as standing in his driveway, yelling for him to call 911.

At about 12:30 a.m., a Merced County Sheriff’s Deputy arrived on scene and upon getting out of his patrol vehicle was charged by SIOLOSEGA VELEGA NUUFOLAU 50, who was yielding a knife in a threatening and aggressive manner. Fearing for his safety, the Deputy ordered Velegea to drop the knife several times as he backed away and before firing his weapon.

The Deputy, an 8 year veteran of the Merced County Sheriff’s Office, received minor injuries as result of a fall during the altercation. Velega was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel after their arrival.

On September 22, 2015, at about 7:30a.m., Deputies were called to Velega’s residence after her husband reported she was behaving irrationally and threatening to kill herself. At that time, deputies confronted Velega in her garage where she brandished two knives at deputies. After a 90 minute standoff, Velega was apprehended through the use of a less lethal device and a Sheriff’s K-9.

Merced County Sheriff’s Detectives were called to the scene and the investigation is continuing, as additional information becomes available and releasable, it will be shared with the public.

The Deputy was placed on routine paid administrative leave pending an internal affairs investigation.
